Tool steel is a group of steels used for various tool applications and classified according to their main use. The properties of tool steels are achieved through heat treatment (hardening and tempering). Below are general information about the different steel groups we stock within each area. We can deliver many more qualities from our factory warehouse. The designation used is the Euro norm with (in brackets) SS norm.

Tool Steel Catalog

EN 1.2510 (SS 2140) is the simplest cold work steel, which must be hardened in oil and therefore does not have the same dimensional stability as steel that does not require such a high cooling rate in the hardening process. After hardening and tempering, the steel has good toughness and hardness. The steel is suitable for tools for short series. The steel is stocked in round and flat in several versions.

EN 1.2363 (SS 2260) is a medium alloy steel that is hardened in air/protective gas (vacuum). The steel is very dimensionally stable with good toughness and high hardness after hardening. The steel is preferably used for punching and cutting applications in medium-length series. The steel is also used for production details where high hardness and wear resistance are sought.

EN 1.2379 (SS 2310) is a high-alloy steel that is mainly used in punching and cutting applications in long series. The steel is dimensionally stable when hardened in air/protective gas (vacuum). It gets high hardness and great wear resistance against abrasive wear due to its high carbide content.

Hot Work Steel

EN 1.2344 (SS 2242) is the standard steel for hot work applications. It has good dimensional stability during heat treatment, high hardness at elevated temperature, high resistance to thermal shock and thermal fatigue, good toughness in all directions. The steel can be nitrided with maintained core hardness of approximately 50 Hrc. The steel is also recommended for structural details where high strength combined with high toughness is required.

Quenched and Tempered Steels for Demanding Applications

Toolox 33 and Toolox 44. Ready to use in delivery condition, hardened and tempered. Toolox 33 with a hardness of approx. 300 HB and Toolox 44 with a hardness of 45 Hrc. No surprises after hardening. No extra costs for heat treatment or fine-tuning, low residual stresses in the material, very good polishing and etching properties. These steels can be used for shaping tool details such as inserts in plastic molds or for forming tools such as drawing or pressing tools, as well as for other details where high strength and good toughness are desired.
